Theft of Tax File Numbers.

One of the areas of increasing fraud is Tax File Number theft.

A tax file number is as important as a bank account password.  In a sense it is your identity, and it is not to be used improperly by someone else.

These days it is customary (although not entirely safe) to provide credit card and bank account details to websites and in response to email requests.

Increasingly tax file number details are being sought.

The only persons who should properly be provided with your tax file number are your tax agent, employer, superannuation fund, and an investment body that may be paying you income in the future.

Be suspicious of any other requests.  Don't respond automatically to a telephone request - call them back before divulging your tax file number.  Do not give your tax file number to the internet at all.
